The nature of bisexuality is easily misunderstood by both gays and straight people. The concept that someone could be attracted to both men and women can seem confusing, especially within cultural models that classify sexuality as either one or the other.
He was the first person I told that I was gay in my 25 years on the planet. Telling him removed a weight I had been carrying for as long as I could remember. I am forever grateful that he was there for me that day.
The dialogue culminated with my mother leaving the conversation and my father coming to the conclusion that it was just a phase. I was aware of the grief that some parents underwent while they mourned the loss of a child they thought they knew, but I was feeling a sense of loss too. I had disappointed them and I couldn’t figure out how to forgive myself for that.
